UWNYS 30 Day Budget Letter and Senate Testimony

United Way of New York State has sent Governor Cuomo a 30-day letter requesting amendments to his budget proposal for 2012-13. Click here to see the 30-day letter dated January 26.

Testimony has been submitted to the state Senate on behalf of UWNYS and four other human services organizations for a public hearing on Not for Profit Executive Compensation on February 6. Click here to see the testimony.

Times-Union Story – Schools and Private Fundraising

Today’s Times-Union ran a front page story describing stepped up efforts by schools to engage in private fundraising, including creating foundations to pay for supplies, equipment, and activities that property taxes no longer cover.

United Ways that are working on education issues should consider the implications of this trend.

Speaker Sheldon Silver Proposes Increase in Minimum Wage

NYS Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver has proposed an increase in the state’s minimum wage from $7.25 to $8.50 and be indexed annually to inflation beginning in 2014. The legislation (A 9148)  also sets a minimum wage for food services workers who receive tips at $5.86.

The bill has the strong backing of the NYS AFL-CIO and the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store union.

United Ways of Cayuga and Seneca Counties Launch Community Indicators Website

The United Ways of Cayuga County, led by Tim Kelly, and Seneca County, led by Karen Beals have unveiled a new web site with 70 community indicators. Their collaborative effort is part of the ongoing Seneca County Partners for Children, Youth and Family and  the United Way of Cayuga County’s work on children and family issues. The Center for Governmental Research of CGR developed the site for the United Ways and their partners.

Video of Cabinet Meeting – Press for Mandate Reform and Pension Changes

Click here to see the video of yesterday’s meeting of Governor Cuomo and his Cabinet.

The Governor is also issuing a number of press releases around the state from county and business leaders, Which support his proposal for mandate relief and changes to the state’s pension plans for future state employees. The latter proposals are opposed by public employees unions and a number of state legislators. Click here to see the list of these releases and read those of interest.
